Interesting Facts |
|
Tracy Chevalier was born and raised in
Washington, D.C. but moved to London in 1984. She intended to be there
for only six months.... she has never left (Lisa - this better not
happen to you!)
This book is based on Johannes Vermeer's
famous painting of a Girl with a Pearl Earring. Interestingly enough,
two other books in recent years have been inspired by Vermeer paintings:
"The Music Lesson" by Katherine Weber and "Girl in Hyacinth Blue" by
Susan Vreeland. The Washington Post recently did an article on this
topic. You can find the story at
A Full Palette of Plots.

From the back of the cover...
"History and fiction merge seamlessly in Tracy
Chevalier's luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening.
Through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Grier, the world of 1660s Holland comes
dazzlingly alive in this richly imagined portrait of the young woman who
inspired one of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings."
